Senior Advisor
Who we need
At Mantle Developments, we build climate leaders. To do that, we need smart, mission-driven team members. We focus on greening the built environment through embodied carbon life cycle assessment and management, operational carbon management, net-zero and climate resilience strategies, and green building certifications - including LEED, Zero Carbon Building Standard, Toronto Green Standard, and others. We need an experienced and talented Senior Advisor with the passion and expertise to skillfully support our projects in these and other emerging areas of climate action.
Who you are
You are a self-starter, team player, and doer. You communicate well, empathize with clients and teammates, are highly organized and engaged, and have a strong sense of accountability. You are passionate about working on innovative, emerging topics in the built environment and aren’t afraid to ask questions. You have a strong sense of accountability and honed communication skills.
We are open to remote working arrangements, with Toronto being the preferred location for this role due to our office location and the high number of clients based there.
What’s in it for you
A chance to support, educate, build, inspire, and strategize. Your time here would include:
- Managing multiple projects and clients, including:
- Leading and overseeing technical work, including carbon management and the specifics below.
- Working with real estate developers and manufacturers who are pioneering development efforts to minimize whole-life cycle carbon
- Working with portfolio and company-level GHG management, strategy and sustainability, and climate-related frameworks and disclosure programs, including SBTi, SASB, GRESB, CDPF, GHG Protocol, and others.
- Managing climate and green building rating systems, certifications, and mandatory compliance documentation, including LEED, Zero Carbon Building Standard, Toronto Green Standard, and others
- Working with government entities on climate-related policy development
- Continuous learning: we have a learning culture and offer many opportunities for professional development. This is critical to stay on the cutting edge, which is where we like to be
- Providing support functions, including writing proposals and project or policy-related marketing pieces, copyediting reports
How you will make a difference:
- Research and strategy. You will direct technical and policy analysis, strategy development, and implementation.
- Policy advice. You will train executive teams and board members, providing information on significant policy developments.
- Lead projects. You will spearhead the end-to-end process for green building certification; enhanced climate-related disclosure projects, including LEED and GRESB; and carbon assessment projects, including embodied carbon and life cycle assessment.
Qualifications – What you bring to our collaborative team:
- Passion for our purpose
- You are deeply committed to improving the climate and are excited to help clients be climate leaders.
- Experience
- A minimum of 5 years managing sustainability-related projects and clients.
- Experience consulting with real estate, design & construction, manufacturing, government, and/ or engineering clients is an asset.
- Education
- A post-secondary degree in engineering or environmental science is required.
- Advanced degrees (MASc, MSc, MBA, Ph.D.) and designations such as PEng and LEED AP or similar are assets.
- Desirable skills and experience
- Sustainable Infrastructure and Building Design: Deep understanding of green building standards (e.g., LEED, ZCB, Fitwel, BREEAM, WELL), whole-building life cycle assessments (LCA), embodied carbon reduction, and materials efficiency strategies. Experience with sustainable construction materials such as precast concrete and knowledge of systems like Stubbe's FastTrack would be essential.
- Climate Risk and Resilience Planning: Expertise in assessing climate risks for infrastructure, including performing climate risk assessments and developing adaptation strategies to increase resilience to climate change (e.g., flood resilience, extreme weather adaptation).
- Policy and Market Expertise: Familiarity with decarbonization policies, building regulations, and emerging market trends around low-carbon construction, including experience working with policymakers or regulatory bodies to develop climate-smart infrastructure strategies.
- Consulting Experience: Significant experience advising clients (developers, asset owners, policymakers) on integrating low-carbon systems, achieving compliance with environmental standards, and navigating complex regulatory environments, ideally with both private and public sector experience.
- Project Management: Leadership in overseeing complex projects, including cross-functional teams. This includes guiding large-scale projects like carbon assessments for infrastructure or data centers, managing sustainability programs, and ensuring alignment with environmental goals.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Strong ability to engage with various stakeholders, including Indigenous communities, clients, architects, engineers, and environmental specialists, particularly in projects that require cultural sensitivity and collaboration.
- Thought Leadership and Innovation: Senior Advisors often serve as thought leaders, contributing to industry white papers, webinars, or panels and pioneering new approaches to climate leadership in the built environment.
- Life cycle assessments (LCA), GHG accounting, green building certifications (e.g., LEED, ZCB), and/or energy modeling: Candidates should have 5+ years of experience in conducting LCAs, performing greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and/or working with green building certification systems. This includes managing sustainability assessments, integrating LCA findings into design or construction processes, and guiding clients on GHG reduction strategies. Familiarity with tools like One Click LCA or Open LCA and experience with energy simulation software (e.g., IES-VE, EnergyPlus, eQuest) would be highly valuable. Previous experience in performing ASHRAE Level I and II energy audits involving detailed energy consumption analyses for buildings, identifying efficiency measures, and recommending retrofits or system optimizations to reduce energy use, as well as knowledge of energy codes, such as ASHRAE 90.1, is highly desirable.
- Environmental product declarations (EPDs): Experience with conducting product-level LCAs and developing EPDs is highly desirable.
- Project and construction cost estimation: This includes performing cost estimation for sustainable construction projects, calculating embodied carbon costs, and creating financial models (pro forma) to assess the economic viability of projects. Experience working with quantity surveyors, contractors, or cost consultants in green building contexts will be advantageous.
- Highly functional use of enterprise software tools: This includes managing projects using Microsoft Excel for financial and data analysis, Google Docs/Sheets for collaboration, and Slack or other communication platforms for team coordination. Familiarity with advanced features such as pivot tables, formulas, and macros in Excel will be expected for efficient project management and reporting.
- Project leadership. You are a strategic thinker with solid project and client management skills, business acumen, accountability, and financial proficiency. You have a very strong ability to communicate, both written and verbal, and can influence and inspire project teams to achieve goals and objectives effectively and engender accountability within them. Expertise in partnering with internal and external stakeholders to identify business challenges and opportunities to develop effective strategies is critical.
